Hurricane Dorian Emerald Isle: Ring Camera Shows Tornado Strike

EMERALD ISLE, NC — The spinning winds of category 2 Hurricane Dorian spawned a tornado Thursday in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, that crumpled and twisted homes in the community. It was one of 20 tornadoes that were reported Thursday morning across the state, reports said. One was caught by a Ring doorbell camera, which the homeowners viewed from afar. A threat of tornadoes is expected to last until early Friday, according to emergency officials.

More than 6,000 residents were already without power by Thursday afternoon, according to officials. Much of coastal North Carolina remained under a storm surge warning and hurricane warning, as well as the tornado watch.

Jason Sawyer and his wife spent the weekend getting their property in the Boardwalk RV park ready for storms. They were checking storm reports on Facebook Thursday when Sawyer remembered the Ring camera at the beach house and called to his wife. Together they watched the tornado rip apart their house.

“We weren’t sure what we were going to come back to, but we sure didn’t expect this,” he told WRAL.

Dorian apparently spawned at least one tornado in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, damaging several homes, and another twister touched down in the beach town of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, mangling and overturning several trailer homes in a jumble of sheet metal. No immediate injuries were reported but electricity was out in much of the area.

In coastal Wilmington, North Carolina, just above the South Carolina line, heavy rain fell horizontally, trees bent in the wind and traffic lights swayed as the hurricane drew near. The four deaths attributed to the storm took place in Florida and North Carolina. All of them involved men who died in falls or by electrocution while trimming trees, putting up storm shutters or otherwise getting ready for the hurricane.

Thursday morning, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for parts of eastern and central North Carolina, with tornado warnings for many areas along the North Carolina coast, including Jacksonville, Swansboro, Cedar Point, Sneads Ferry and Topsail Beach.

The National Weather Service confirmed to that a tornado caused the damage at an RV park about 9 a.m. Thursday.

“There have been confirmed touchdowns already this morning,” North Carolina Emergency Management said Thursday morning. “Make sure you have ways to receive weather-related alerts and know what to do if a tornado warning is issued in your area.
