Infuriated Jack Grealish held back by team-mates as Aston Villa are denied late equaliser at Crystal Palace

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish had to be held back by his team-mates after his side were denied a last-gasp equaliser against Crystal Palace.

After Henri Lansbury scored to make it 1-1, Kevin Friend disallowed the goal because he thought Grealish dived in the build up.

The 23-year-old charged towards Crystal Palace’s box in the 96th minute of the clash at Selhurst Park, evading burst challenges from Wilfried Zaha and past Gary Cahill.

And his off-balanced pass reached the feet of Lansbury, who slotted home to level the scoring.

But Friend ruled out the goal and controversially booked for Grealish for diving.

And the 23-year-old was exasperated with the decision, charging towards Palace’s box in the 96th minute of the clash at Selhurst Park.

Decisions like that could well turn out to be the difference between staying up and going down come the end of the season.

And Dean Smith lamented the call, claiming Grealish had every right to be raging with the decision.

“Good goal, I think everyone else thought it was a good goal, and I can’t understand how it hasn’t been given,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“I always wondered how I would be when the first one went against us, and we are disappointed, because I haven’t seen anything at the time, or watching it back. Jack [Grealish] has got a nudge in the back from [Wilfried] Zaha, and as he offloads it, [Gary] Cahill comes in as well with a challenge as well.

“Simulation no chance. I have been asked if maybe his [Grealish’s] reputation goes before him, but he was the most fouled player in the Championship last season, and for me it was a perfectly good goal that has been chalked off. We all know it is a poor decision.”
