Manchester City 6-0 Chelsea: Blues player ratings after comprehensive humiliation
Chelsea were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City on Sunday in what was a record Premier League defeat for the club.
Sergio Aguero hit a hat-trick, Raheem Sterling bagged a brace and Ilkay Gundogan struck from distance, sending a message to main rivals Liverpool as the title race rages on.
Away from the title race – far, far away – Chelsea now sit sixth and are in something of a crisis.
Maurizio Sarri’s men have started 2019 with away defeats to Tottenham, Arsenal, Bournemouth and now City with a 0-12 aggregate score across the four games.
Read Chelsea’s player ratings for the 6-0 defeat at Manchester City below.
Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5/10
Probably should have done better with Gundogan’s low strike but was relatively blameless for the City onslaught.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 3/10
Conceded the penalty after tripping Sterling, who gave his Spanish marker a tough afternoon.
Antonio Rudiger – 3/10
Unable to contain the relentlessness of Aguero.
David Luiz – 3/10
Was also hapless in the face of City’s attacking force.
Marcos Alonso – 2/10
Badly at fault for the first goal and unable to handle the creativity of Bernardo Silva.
N’Golo Kante – 4/10
A below-par performance from the Frenchman, who sometimes found himself bypassed.
Jorginho – 4/10
Found himself overrun at times although he was always a willing runner.
Ross Barkley – 2/10
Inexplicably headed towards his own goal which allowed Aguero to score his second and City’s third, effectively ending any hope of a comeback.
Pedro – 4/10
A largely anonymous display from the Spaniard, though he did miss Chelsea’s best chance by firing a one on one straight at Ederson.
Eden Hazard – 4/10
Caught napping alongside Alonso for City’s opener, allowing Bernardo Silva to latch on to De Bruyne’s free-kick, and his mazy runs often came to nothing.
Gonzalo Higuain – 5/10
Long-distance volley well saved by Ederson but was unable to impose himself.
Substitutes:
Mateo Kovacic – 5/10
Brought on to shore up Chelsea’s midfield.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 5/10
Could not make an impact.
Emerson – 5/10
Tidy enough from the Italian.
