Manchester United are beginning to suffer the financial effects of their poor season, with the club worth $1billion less than it was last August.

Following a nightmare campaign which saw the Red Devils finish sixth and fail to qualify for the Champions League, the controlling company which owns the club has seen 25% of its worth vanish.

Manchester United Plc was trading at $3.17bn (£2.5bn) on Monday morning despite being valued at an all-time high of $4.27bn (£3.31bn) at the beginning of last season.

The lack of optimism at Old Trafford has been reflected in the markets, with shares costing $18.08, down from $26.20 ten months ago.

It is understood that failing to qualify for the Champions League has cost the club around £80m in UEFA payments, sponsorship deals and ticket sales.

Red Devils fans have stepped up their protests against the Glazers in recent weeks, demanding the owners sell the club and move on.

Pressure on the Americans will only grow as a result of its plummeting value – and reports they are considering selling up.

According to the Daily Express, the Glazers are wary of the amount they would have to invest to make United genuine title contenders again.

They have already spent £60m this summer, buying Dan James from Swansea for £15m and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £45m, however they could yet generate more than £200m by selling Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
