Mason Mount recalls Champions League nights as a Chelsea ball boy and the instructions Jose Mourinho used to give
Mason Mount has recalled the instructions Jose Mourinho used to give to ball boys when he was manager of Chelsea.
Mourinho, the new Tottenham boss, watched as his side came from 2-0 down to beat Olympiakos 4-2 and secure their passage into the knockout stages.
Harry Kane scored twice and his second came courtesy of some quick-thinking from the ball boy, who threw to Serge Aurier so he could release Lucas Moura and he crossed for the England striker to finish.
Afterwards, Mourinho hugged the ball boy and heaped praise on him calling his actions ‘intelligent’.
“I was between 10 and 16 years old, a very good ball boy and the kid is a very good ball boy,” Mourinho said.
“He understands the game, reads the game, he’s not there just to look to the stands, or to the lights, or to the scarves he’s there living the game and playing the game very, very well.
“In the end, I wanted to invite him to the dressing room to celebrate with us, but he disappeared. I don’t know where he is but very good ball boy.”
“I love intelligent ballboys, like I was! I was a brilliant ballboy as a kid.
“And this kid today was brilliant, because he reads the game, he understands the game and he made an assist.
“He made an important assist. So it’s a good moment for him and he’ll never forget it.
“To do that, you have to be a very good ball boy.”
Mount was in the academy during Mourinho’s time at Stamford Bridge and remembered how it felt to be part of European nights in West London.
“The first thing I really remember was being a ball boy at the games,” he told the Chelsea website.
“That was a big thing for me. I was so buzzing about that and you can’t really be any closer than that!
“One moment that stands out was under Jose Mourinho.
“If we were winning in Champions League games then he would tell us to keep hold of the ball and not to throw it back so quickly!”
