Mauricio Pochettino ‘doesn’t know’ if Tottenham are in talks to re-sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid

Mauricio Pochettino insists he has no idea if Tottenham are in for Gareth Bale.

The Real Madrid forward has been told he can leave the Bernabeu this summer, with Zinedine Zidane revealing the Welshman is in negotiations with an unnamed club over a transfer.

Tottenham have been credited with an interest in their former player and, while Pochettino hasn’t ruled out the possibility of re-signing Bale, he says it is in Daniel Levy’s hands on whether the club make a move for the 30-year-old.

Speaking to reporters after Tottenham’s 3-2 International Champions Cup win over Juventus in Singapore, Pochettino said: “At the moment I don’t have any information from my chairman.

“I do not know if it is us or another club. It is the job of my chairman to build the best possible club.”

Bale has always made it clear he wants to stay at Real Madrid, and is contracted to the club until 2022.

But he has been told in no uncertain terms that he is not part of Zidane’s plans at the Bernabeu and a summer transfer now seems certain.

Speaking on Saturday after leaving Bale out of the Real squad to face Bayern Munich in the International Champions Cup in Houston, Zidane said he hopes a deal to sell Bale can be struck soon “for everyone’s sake”.

Zidane said: “He wasn’t included in the squad because the club is working on his departure and that’s why he didn’t play.

“We’ll have to see what happens in the coming days. We’ll have to see if it goes through tomorrow, if it does then all the better. Let’s hope, for everyone’s sake, that it happens soon. The club is dealing with the club that he’ll move to.

“We hope he leaves soon. It would be best for everyone. We are working on his transfer to a new team.

“I have nothing personal against him, but there comes a time where things are done because they must be done. I have to make decisions. We have to change.”

Zidane’s comments left Bale’s agent infuriated, with Jonathan Barnett branding the Real Madrid boss a ‘disgrace’ for his treatment of his client.

Having joined Real for a then-world record £85million fee from Tottenham in 2013, Bale has helped the Spanish powerhouses win four Champions League titles, LaLiga and a host of other trophies.

Barnett said: “Zidane is a disgrace, he shows no respect for a player that has done so much for Real Madrid.”

He added to BBC Wales: “We’re working on a few things. Gareth is a Real Madrid player but if he does leave it will be his own decision, not Mr Zidane’s.”
