Mauricio Pochettino sacking: Jamie Carragher likens Argentine’s exit from Tottenham to departures of former Liverpool managers Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez
Jamie Carragher believes Mauricio Pochettino’s time at Tottenham came to a natural end.
Spurs ended the Argentine’s five-and-a-half-year spell in north London on Tuesday after a run of just three wins from their opening 12 Premier League games.
The club’s poor start to the season also included a shock exit to League Two minnows Colchester in the Carabao Cup and a humiliating 7-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Spurs appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager less than 24 hours after giving Pochettino the boot.
And Liverpool legend Carragher believes the ‘Tottenham project’ under Pochettino had run its course.

He told talkSPORT: “Towards the end of last season, the start of this season, I think it’s fair to say that the Tottenham project with Pochettino and that group of players who’ve been together for three, four years, it’s come to an end.
“It has come to an end – I said that a few weeks ago. It’s not a criticism of the players or the manager. Sometimes it happens.

“Not because they’re bad managers or the squad wasn’t good enough, it just runs its course.
“Everyone always has this belief that every manager has to be [like Sir] Alex Ferguson. That’s a one-off. It just doesn’t happen.
“If you’re in a top-level Premier League job for five or six years, you’ve done a great job.”
