Men in tights
If Marni is the last word in fashion forward looks, men will be prancing about in leggings this fall. A horrifying thought for most of us, so what was Marni thinking?
“Unconventional but sophisticated,” Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni’s Creative Director, has reportedly said of the disconcerting image. According to Fashion Wire Daily’s Godfrey Deeny, men have been wearing leggings in the house for a while now, but never outside. Maybe it is one of their best-kept secrets, but having lived with male roommates for a while, I can attest to the fact that there was nary a legging in sight in all that time. As for wearing them under a chic button-down shirt and signature boxy Marni coat, please!! There is comfort and then there is visual discomfort. Most men will avoid looking like an off-duty ballet dancer at all costs.
At the brand’s menswear show in Milan last month, models braved the catwalk in microfibre cotton and wool leggings in forest green, dark red, violet and grey. All leggings feature stirrup straps, another terrifying remnant from the late Eighties. However, translating this look to the high street is easy. It calls for a slim silhouette, a boxy jacket or overcoat, a sharp button down shirt and a smart, slim tie. The scary legging can be replaced by a slim-fit black jean or skinny smart, woollen pant that stops at the ankle. Good luck boys!
