Michigan 'would like to definitely play' two quarterbacks this season, Jim Harbaugh says | Sporting News
Michigan seems to be planning to play multiple quarterbacks.
There’s a chance the Wolverines could rotate between senior Shea Patterson and junior Dylan McCaffrey throughout the season, coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters this week.
“All options are open that way, in terms of that,” Harbaugh said, via the Detroit Free Press. “Would like to definitely play both.”
Harbaugh had first discussed the scenario during a press conference last month and said the team could redefine “what a starter is” in 2019.
“(Haven’t done that) too much, no,” Harbaugh said at Big 10 Media Day. “I’m really not talking about playing them both at the same time (on a play). When I say both in games, it’d be they’re both playing quarterback during the same game. And the way it stands now, in every game.”
Patterson, an Ole Miss transfer, completed 64.6% of his passes and threw 22 touchdowns, along with seven interceptions, in 13 games for Michigan last season. Harbaugh officially named Patterson the starter Monday.
“I’m just going to go out there as the quarterback, as the starting quarterback, I want to be out there every single play,” Patterson said earlier this month. “That’s my job. I want to win every single game. I always want the ball in my hands. (The rotation is) up to Coach Harbaugh.”
McCaffrey accounted for three total touchdowns in a limited role last season.
Michigan is set to open the season Saturday against Middle Tennessee State.
