Neville Southall urges Manchester United to swap Paul Pogba for Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale amid trade-off rumours
Former Everton and Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall would have Gareth Bale over Paul Pogba at Manchester United.
Reports have linked Real Madrid outcast Bale and United ace Pogba with a stunning swap deal.
After securing the £88million transfer of Chelsea star Eden Hazard, Real chiefs are believed to be keen on a move for the midfielder.
Earlier this month, Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane hinted Bale’s Real future was in doubt and left him on the bench for the club’s final-day home defeat to Real Sociedad.
Meanwhile, Pogba struggled for form in the latter stages of last season, failing to score from open play since February.
In March, the France international admitted a move to Real would be a ‘dream’.
The Daily Mirror report Real chiefs are willing to include Bale in a deal to sign Pogba this summer.
And Southall, who was capped 92 times by Wales, would love to see his countryman playing at Old Trafford – even if it led to Pogba’s departure.
He told talkSPORT: “If I looked at Bale to Man United, it would be like having [Ryan] Giggs and [David] Beckham. He’s got genuine pace. Gareth’s in a great position, he’s on £600,000-a-week.
“They [Real Madrid] have got to do something with him, they either play him or shove him off. If they shove him off they’ve got to pay him off and he can pick where he goes.
“If you’re saying he’s part of the Pogba deal, I’d rather have somebody that runs about every week, tries his best and turns up to produce magic than somebody who doesn’t care.
“If I’ve got a group of younger people underneath the first-team and I’m saying ‘look, you’ve got to try every week’, and then they look at Pogba and go ‘no you don’t, he’s 90 million quid, he doesn’t try’.
“And then you’ve got Bale who turns up all the time and does everything you want… I know who I’d rather have.”
