Several high profile names have been linked to the job including Jose Mourinho and Steven Gerrard.
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie posted on Twitter about Bruce being looked at by the club.
He said: “We understand Steve Bruce is one of the names under consideration to take over at Newcastle United.
“He’s been backed in to 9/4 favourite with some major bookmakers overnight.
“Bruce is Newcastle-born, but of course previously managed rivals Sunderland.”
The 58-year-old managed arch-rivals Sunderland from June 2009 to November 2011.
Bruce is a childhood Newcastle fan, though, and blamed the ‘absolute hatred’ surrounding football in the North East as a reason why he lost his job.

He is currently in charge of Sheffield Wednesday and only took over at the club in February.
Bruce also commented on the speculation linking him with the job.
He told BBC Sheffield: “Maybe because I’m from Newcastle (is the reason I’ve been linked).
“But no, I’ve been on holiday. I never take any notice of all that sort of speculation or tittle-tattle because the way the newspapers are today, no disrespect, I think there have been 150 managers associated with Newcastle. I would suppose I’m going to be one of them.”
