Newcastle ‘plotting’ ambitious loan move for Chelsea defender Reece James as Steve Bruce looks to give youngster regular first team football

Newcastle are reportedly trying to sign Chelsea full back Reece James on loan for the second half of the season.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce is thought to be a big fan of the teenager and plans to see if he is available.

The Sun reports that Bruce is willing to give James regular first-team football with Newcastle for a few months as the right-back’s development continues.

The 19-year-old impressed on loan with Wigan in the Championship last season and was even named as captain towards the end of the season.

He has yet to force his way into Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team this season because of the form of Cesar Azpilicueta.

James is expected to eventually take over from the 30-year-old and is just one of a number of promising youngsters at the London club.

He only has 28 minutes of Premier League football to his name this season though and a loan move could help him gain valuable experience.

Newcastle have struggled with their right-back position with the likes of Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and DeAndre Yedlin all featuring.

Lampard may be reluctant to let James leave, though, as Chelsea have no other natural right-backs in their squad and would be left short if Azpilicueta picks up an injury.
