PSG Jordan kit: Ligue 1 giants wearing special Champions League shirts this season as part of Nike collaboration

Paris Saint-Germain are wearing Jordan-branded Nike kits in this season’s Champions League.

The collaboration between NBA legend Michael Jordan’s brand and PSG was rumoured for some time after Justin Timberlake wore a jacket from the team-up during a show in the French capital.

PSG have worn Nike kits since 1989, and this move comes as part of their current £22million-a-year deal.

The jacket worn by Timberlake showed the PSG badge with the Eiffel Tower replaced by Jordan’s famous ‘Jumpman’ silhouette.

The actual bespoke kit is based on the jacket as part of an entire range of clothing produced by the collaboration but has seen the silhouette replace the Nike tick instead.

Nike, which provided the boots for 65 per cent of players at last summer’s World Cup, are keen to raise its football-related revenues, which a Bloomberg report showed sitting at £1.6bn in 2016 compared to rival Adidas’ £2.3bn.

The Jordan brand launched in 1984 when its eponymous founder went third overall in the NBA draft to the Chicago Bulls.

With the Bulls, who had never won an NBA title until Jordan arrived, he won six rings. They have not won another championship since.

In so doing, Jordan became the face of basketball, and is regarded by many as the greatest ever to have graced the court.

Endorsements from the brand that carries his name have helped him build a net worth of £1.29bn, placing him inside the top 1,500 richest people in the world.

The Air Jordan arm of the brand now sponsors 21 NBA players, including 2016/17 league MVP Russell Westbrook and Houston Rockets duo Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul.

It has begun branching out into football in recent years, with PSG’s Neymar launching his NJR x JORDAN Hypervenom boots back in 2016.

He became the first player to wear custom Jordan boots in a game when he donned them for Brazil’s gold medal-winning Olympic campaign in Rio that year.

Neymar, who cites Jordan as one of his idols, is one of the most marketable players on the planet, and makes £13m a year through his various endorsements, according to Forbes.

PSG will hope the new kit brings them more success in Europe than they have been used to in recent years, despite the vast outlays they have made improving their squad.

Despite bringing in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for a combined £366m in 2017, they have failed in recent Champions League campaigns.

They take on Manchester United in the Round of 16 this season.
