Steve Bruce EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle boss believes he can end Magpies’ long-awaited search for silverware
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has told talkSPORT that he believes he can bring some long-awaited silverware to St James’ Park.
It has been 50 years since the Magpies last lifted a major trophy, but Bruce is adamant the glory days can return during his tenure at the football club.
Speaking on Kick Off, he said: “I’d like to think I’ve done okay in management so far, my record isn’t too bad!
“I’m going to have a good crack at this job, it won’t be easy – I know that.
“Hopefully the experiences that I’ve had over these past 20 years will stand me in good stead and I can have a positive impact at this football club.
“I hope I can get this football club over the line in terms of winning a trophy.
“I’m not saying that will be the Premier League, but there’s an opportunity elsewhere with the FA Cup and so forth.
“There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be aiming for that considering the stature of this football club.”
Meanwhile, Bruce has revealed that unpopular owner Mike Ashley, who revealed in a rare interview last week that he could ‘own this club forever’, has been very supportive in the early days of his managerial reign.
Bruce has already been busy in the transfer window, with the club smashing their previous transfer record after clinching a £40m deal for Brazilian striker Joelinton.
“The biggest thing to say so far is that Mike has offered his support and that can only be a good thing,” Bruce added.
“He came to the training ground for the first time in a few years the other day and that was something we all appreciated.
“This squad was only in the Championship a couple of years ago, so the fact we’ve broken our transfer record twice in the last few months speaks volumes.”
