Tottenham striker Harry Kane’s hamstring injury has worrying parallels with Michael Owen, says Tony Cascarino

Tony Cascarino says he has ‘grave concerns’ about Harry Kane’s career after the Tottenham forward underwent surgery on a serious injury, fearing he could end up like injury-plagued Michael Owen.

The England captain has been ruled out until April at the earliest, and could even miss out on Euro 2020, after he ruptured a tendon in his left hamstring.

Kane suffered the problem during Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Southampton, and he has since gone under the knife to fix the problem and begin a lengthy rehab process.

It’s the latest big injury for the striker who has struggled with his fitness throughout his career at Spurs – although it so far hasn’t affected his incredible scoring output of 181 goals and 30 assists in 278 games for the club.

But Cascarino says this is the most serious injury of all, and believes it has worrying parallels with the problem that effectively ended Owen’s career.

The former Liverpool hitman suffered a serious hamstring tear when he was just 19 while playing for the Reds, which led to five months on the sidelines.

The progression of medicine since 1998 means Kane will receive treatment that just wasn’t available in Owen’s day, however.

Instead of having surgery, the Liverpool teen was forced to strengthen the other muscles in his leg to compensate for his ruptured tendon, which led to the multitude of other injuries that hampered his career until he retired in 2013.

Kane, meanwhile, is expected to have a better – if not complete – recovery after his stint in hospital.

But Cascarino fears it could still have a big impact on the Spurs talisman’s game.

“I’d have grave concerns over the severity of the injury to Harry Kane,” said the talkSPOPT pundit.

“If you read Michael Owen’s book, at 19 when he had a serious hamstring injury, that was one that changed his career.

“I’m not saying Harry Kane is going to have the same issues as Michael Owen had, but it did affect Owen.

“And this is major surgery.

“There’s a difference between a normal hamstring injury, just pulling the hamstring and needing time to recover, to needing to go into hospital and have surgery.

“That’s completely different. It’s a much more serious injury.

“To be out until April, I’d have real grave concerns of what Harry will be like when he comes back.”
