Valencia 2-2 Chelsea: Tammy Abraham gives positive injury update after being stretchered off during draw

Frank Lampard and Tammy Abraham have provided positive updates after Abraham was stretchered off during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Valencia on Wednesday night.

The Blues striker clashed with Argentinian centre-back Ezequiel Garay, jumping for a corner and landing badly on top of his opponent’s feet.

Abraham got up holding his side, though at the time he was substituted it was unclear whether he’d suffered a knock to his hip or rib.

The 22-year-old initially looked to walk off the pitch, but ultimately had to be stretchered away.

Despite the worrying sight, Lampard said post-match: “He is in the dressing room now. A bang on the hip, it might not be as severe as we first thought.”

Abraham later added: “It’s much better, much better than when it happened.

“At the time I was fearful of the worst obviously, but I got in and was able to walk again, move about.

“I’m thankful, hopefully it’s not too long.

“I’ll have a scan tomorrow to see what the news is but hopefully it is just a bruise.

“It was a knee near my hip arena, hopefully it’s nothing too serious.”

The injury came right at the end of the first half, meaning no immediate substitution was needed.

Michy Batshuayi emerged to start the second period up front.

In the game itself, Mateo Kovacic netted his first Chelsea goal after after Carlos Soler put the hosts in front, then VAR came to the visitors’ aid by awarding a Christian Pulisic strike.

Kepa Arrizabalaga saved a penalty to keep Frank Lampard’s side in the lead, but the Spanish goalkeeper was helpless as Daniel Wass’ cross sailed over his head and cannoned in off the post to secure the draw.
