Willson Contreras injury update: Cubs catchers placed on IL as 'precautionary' move | Sporting News
The Cubs placed catcher Willson Contreras on the injured list Tuesday, which Cubs Insider reports is a “precautionary” measure.
The move is retroactive to Sunday, and Contreras, who is dealing with a right foot sprain, is expected to resume baseball activities by Friday and return to the lineup after the minimum 10-day stay.
According to the report, Contreras, who hasn’t played since July 13, told manager Joe Maddon he could have played Monday against the Reds, but the decision was made to rest him. He’s seen a specialist, who diagnosed him with a “fairly innocuous” bruise.

It’s obviously good news for the Cubs that Contreras will only be out a brief period. With 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and a slash line of .286/.382/.565, the 27-year-old catcher is on pace for career highs in all those categories.
The Cubs acquired veteran catcher Martin Maldonado from the Royals on Monday night in exchange for left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery.
Maldonado is slashing .224/.288/.359 this season.
